Civitanova's seaport

The city of Civitanova Marche is very attached to the sea, on which it stays. Since Roman Age the inhabitants realized harbour structures, at first probably having fluvial patterns (because of the peculiar flat and sandy coast); but during the XVII century a permanent fishermen settling grew up. Initially directed to guarantee the families of the same fishermen’s subsistence, seafaring working becomes, with passing of the time, a very important factor of local business.

WELCOME TO CIVITANOVA

Cluana, today known as Civitanova Marche, was situated on the north side of the mouth of Cluentum river (Chienti river). On the hill, near Cluana, rose a small centre, Cluentis Vicus, which is now named Civitanova Alta.

 The most ancient decorative portrait in Civitanova Marche is the patron Saint Marone’s one. He’s a photometry and apostle from Piceno, whose image was placed on the banners of the city and in public deeds’ seals. Graces and miracles, taken place during the centuries until nowadays confirm the continuity of a cult emphasized just from the presence of the saint’s body. Popular tradition tells moreover about the strong devotion of local fishermen and sailors, who took part in religious processions and offered presents for thanking about escaped dangers in sea waters.

This work was carried out based on the plans of Engineer Guglielmo Prosperi firstly and then Engineer Francesco Burghignoli later, and it was finished on 5 June 1872, the year of its opening. The theatre was opened again in 1997, after a long period of restoration, and it houses the theatrical season of Civitanova. It is a typical Italian theatre, with a well-proportioned shape, whose hall communicates with the stage through the proscenium. A rectangular foyer with eight Tuscan columns, barrel vault and a lacunar ceiling links the entrance corridor to the pit.
